Assumptions about character
Lvl 90 barb with 29 ww and 27 mastery
40% ed in arreat and ss
Highlords + ravens, and gores

Weapon Dmg

First the min/max damage of a 415 ebotdz is needed.

Ethereal Weapon Damage

Formula:
Weapon Minimum Damage = [[Base Minimum Damage * 1.5] * (1+ (+x % Enhanced Damage)/100)] + (+x to Minimum Damage)
Weapon Maximum Damage = [[Base Maximum Damage * 1.5] * (1+ (+x % Enhanced Damage)/100)] + (+x to Maximum Damage)
+x % Enhanced Damage and +x to Minimum/Maximum Damage in this case is only what is shown on the weapon.

Berserker Axe 24-71
Minimum Damage
[24 * 1.5] * (1 + (415% ed / 100))
36 * (1+(415 / 100)
36 * (1 + 4.15)
36 * (5.15)
185.4
185 Minimum Damage On a Perfect eBotD Zerker
Maximum Damage
[74 * 1.5] * (1 + (415 / 100))
111 * (1 + 4.15)
111 * 5.15
571.65
571 Maximum Damage on a Perfect eBotd Zerker
378 Average Damage on a Perfect eBotd Zerker

Grief's Sole Weapon Damage
Berserker Axe 24-71
Damage +xx works basically like +xx minimum and maximum damage
So Grief's:
Worst Roll: 364 - 411, 387 Average Dmg
Average Roll: 394 - 441, 417 Average Damage
Best Roll: 424 - 471, 447 Average Damage
eBotDz's Best Possible Roll: 185 - 571 = 378 Average Damage
Grief Has 20% Ds, but that will be accounted for in the equipment section.

Total Damage:

Formula:
Minimum Damage = (Weapon Minimum Damage + (+x To Minimum Damage)) * (1 + StatsBonus + (+x% Enhanced Damage) / 100)
Maximum Damage = (Weapon Maximum Damage + (+x To Maximum Damage)) * (1 + StatsBonus + (+x % Enhanced Damage) / 100)

+x To Minimum/Maximum Damage' = all non weapon +min/max damage. Like from charms.
+x % Enhanced Damage = all non weapon ED (like in amour/helm/shield etc) and skills (like Might, Heart of Wolverine)

Formula:
1 - [(1 - ds ) * ( 1 - cs )]

Level 27 Axe Mastery yields 158% ed
Level 29 Whirlwind yields 174% ed and 22% critical strike
Both of these are added to non-weapon ed, just like the ed jewels in the armor are.
200 overall strength is assumed, yielding 200 ed from strength.

Perfect Botd
Minimum Damage = (185) * (1 + 200% + ((158 + 174 + 40 + 40) / 100)
= 185 * (3 + (412 / 100)
= 185 * (3 + 4.12)
= 185 * 7.12
= 1317.2
= 1317 Minimum Overall Damage
Maximum Damage = (571 + (37 * 3) * (1 + 200% + ((158 + 174 + 40 + 40) / 100)
= 682 * (3 + (412 / 100)
= 682 * (3 + 4.12)
= 682 * 7.12
= 4855.84
= 4855 Maximum Damage
Average the Two, and you get 3086 average Damage from the eBotDz setup. Then to factor is 22 cs from mastery and 48 ds (15 gores, 33 highlords)
3086 + 3086 * (1 - [(1 - ds ) * ( 1 - cs )])
3086 + 3086 * (1 – ((1 – .48) * (1 - 0.22)))
3086 + 3086 * (1 – (0.52 * - 0.78))
3086 + 3086 * (1 – (0.40)
3086 + 3086 * .60
3086 + 1851.6 = 4937.6
Overall Average Damage = 4937
From this, we can establish that to get the overall damage from this setup, simply multiply the weapon damages by 7.12, while adding any max damage to the max weapon damaged before multiplying by 7.12

Worst Grief
Minimum Damage = 364 * 7.12
= 2591.68
= 2591
Maximum Damage = (411 + 111) * 7.12
= 522 * 7.12
= 3716.64
= 3716
Average Damage
= 3153
Factor in DS and CS… DS = 68 (15 + 33 + 20), CS = 22
3153 + 3153 * (1 - [(1 - .68 ) * ( 1 - .22)])
3153 + 3153 * (1 – (0.32 * 0.78)
3153 + 3153 * (1 – 0.2496)
3153 + 3153 * 0.7504
3153 + 2366
5519.0112
Overall Average Damage = 5519
From this, 75.04% can be shown as the DS/CS adjustment for a Grief wielding build.

Average Grief
Minimum Damage = 394 * 7.12
= 2805.28
= 2805
Maximum Damage = (441 + 111) * 7.12
= 552 * 7.12
= 3941.28
= 3941
Average Damage = 3373
Factor in DS and CS:
3373 + 3373 * 0.7504
3373 + 2531.0992
5904.0992
Overall Average Damage = 5904

Perfect Grief
(Not Counting 15% sup zerker)
Minimum Damage = 424 * 7.12
= 3018.88
= 3018
Maximum Damage = (471 + 111) * 7.12
= 582 * 7.12
= 4143.84
= 4143
Average Damage = 3580.5
= 3580
Factor in DS and CS:
3580 + 3580 * 0.7504
3580 + 2686.432
6266.432
Overall Average Damage = 6266

Summary/Other Notes
Overall Damage from Each Setup (Average Damage)
"Best eBotDz" setup: 4937
"Worst Grief" Setup: 5519
"Average Grief" Setup: 5904
"Best Grief" Setup: 6266
Damage Gained by using Grief
Worst Grief Setup: 582
Average Grief Setup: 967
Best Grief Setup: 1329
Life Gained When Building Entirely Around eBotDz's stats (After lvl 35 bo): 638

So its your choice really, on average of 967 more damage per hit, plus a souce of venom, and more damage to demons. Also, the venom does about 58 damage pvp before res.

Also, for the people who say grief’s + dmg doesn’t go through the pvp penalty/dr, you’re dead wrong.
1) Testing by various people have shown that dr works vs grief
2) All damage goes through the pvp penalty
3) Even if Grief is special, damage from smiters disprove this -> you can’t get 2-3 hit kills with just 340-400 dmg.

Yeah sorry, I was typing too fast...
1) Yeah, Damage Reduction works when you hit someone else with grief.
2) All damage goes through the pvp penalty.

PVP penalty is you do 1/6th of you actual dmg so if it says you do 6k ww you will do 1k dmg in a duel to your oponent and then goes the -dr on top of that dmg.

Nice guide Ling.
